We’ve been the happy owners of our sailboat since April 2014. Our boat is an OE36 with serial number 4. She is designed by the well known Swedish yacht designer Olle Enderlein. Built in 1971, she is older than both of us and she has more sailing miles under her keel than we will ever manage to put behind us.

The OE36

The OE36 number 4 is one of the first six yachts built on the drawings made by Olle Enderlein in 1968. The OE36 was conceived as part of a design competition with the aim to create an ocean going cruiser for a conglomerate of customers in Sweden. The goal was to produce a yacht to compete with the Swan 36 which was one of the most coveted ocean cruisers of that time.

Construction was complicated, and it took some years to get it up to speed. The hulls for the first six yachts were done professionally at the Nordsjö Plastic yard. The interior was built at the Norwegian yard Bjarne Aas A/S and was completed in June 1970. When the Norwegian yard went bankrupt, production was moved to Sweden, and a company was set up outside Oxelösund where customers now were offered to laminate their hulls themselves, with the support of yard professionals.

Our boat is of type I. After 100 hulls had been moulded, adjustments were made which yielded a type II, commonly referred to as the “Crown”.


Number 4, today

We do not know much about the history of our boat during the period from the early seventies until the late nineties. However, we do know that during the years 2001-2014 she has been in very good hands and has been taken very well care of. During this time she has undergone successive refurbishment. During 2003-2005 she spent some time at Lidköpings Båtsnickeri where a lot of the interior was replaced, a new teak deck was laid, and new water and diesel tanks were installed.
